Dubai & UAE Customs Regulations

What to expect when clearing your personal effects and household goods through Dubai Customs.

This page summarizes the general Dubai Customs procedure for personal effects. Rules can change — always confirm current requirements with Dubai Customs’ official website or your DXI moving coordinator before shipping.

1. Personal Effects & Household Goods

Per Dubai Customs, used personal effects and household goods imported for genuine personal use are duty-exempt after inspection by Customs officers. If, on inspection, goods are found to be brand new or in commercial quantities, a 5% customs duty is levied on their value.

2. Required Documents

Your DXI moving coordinator will confirm the exact document set needed for your specific shipment and port of entry.

3. Vehicles

Vehicles are cleared separately from household goods and are not covered by the personal effects duty exemption. A vehicle is evaluated by Dubai Customs’ Valuation Department and inspected, with customs duty levied at 5% of its assessed value. Required documents differ depending on whether the vehicle is imported via a shipping company (original invoice, packing list, bill of lading, passport/Emirates ID copy) or privately (passport copy and invoice).

4. General Guidance

In practice, Dubai Customs and most relocation providers expect imported household goods to genuinely show signs of prior use, and to be in quantities reasonably consistent with furnishing a home rather than a commercial shipment. If you are unsure whether an item qualifies for the personal-effects exemption, ask your DXI moving coordinator before your shipment departs.
